Character Background

• History: https://thekaratekid.fandom.com/wiki/Tory_Nichols
• Core Relationships:

John Kreese - Tory’s sensei. She initially wasn’t entirely comfortable with Sensei Kreese’s brutal methods (such as when she’d defeated her classmate Mitch in a points match and Sensei Kreese told her to hit him again because the fight wasn’t over until the opponent was on the ground). However, the “no mercy” philosophy of Cobra Kai resonated with her, as life hadn’t been merciful to her family. The point when he truly earned her loyalty was when he checked up on her after she stopped going to practice, and helped her deal with her sleazy landlord who suggested she pay her family’s rent by hooking up with him. Kreese empathized with her mother being ill and with Tory’s financial situation, and waived Tory’s martial arts fees so that she could keep up with her training. He further stood up for her when Amanda LaRusso unintentionally got Tory fired from her waitressing job, confronting Amanda and telling her of Tory’s difficult situation. Since Tory’s father is not around, Kreese has become somewhat of a father figure to her, and has earned her loyalty. At the All Valley tournament, Sensei Terry Silver instructed Tory to fight dirty, whereas Sensei Kreese told her that she’d come this far and it was her fight, so whatever happened, it was up to her.

Sam LaRusso - Tory’s rival. Their first impressions of one another were terrible, and things only got worse from there. One factor at the core of their rivalry is the class divide between them. Sam's family owns a car dealership chain, lives in a nice neighbourhood, and belongs to a country club while Tory's family is poor. When they first met, Sam assumed Tory had stolen her mother’s wallet and grabbed her. In response, Tory shoved Sam away and Sam fell onto a table of snacks. The next time they met was at the roller arena where Tory worked. At one point Tory bumped Sam, and Sam later retaliated with a sweeping kick under Tory’s legs while she was skating with a fully tray. At a party, they both drank and Tory happened to see Sam and Miguel kiss, despite the fact that Tory was dating Miguel, and Sam was dating Robby. This infuriated Tory to the point of taking over the PA system at school and challenging Sam to a fight. The fight was brutal and Tory hit Sam in the arm with a spiked bracelet, giving her scars. Since that time, they’ve gotten into fights at an arcade, at the LaRusso house, and at prom. However, due to her promise to Sam’s mother Amanda that she would fight fair at the All Valley tournament, she showed concern for Sam’s well being at the end of their match, asking her if she was okay and thoroughly confusing Sam given their rivalry.

Amanda LaRusso - Enemy turned ally. The first time they met in person, Amanda confronted Tory at her job where she worked as a waitress to tell her to stay away from Sam. It caused Tory to get fired. When Amanda learned that Tory was her family’s breadwinner, she first tried to bring food to the Nichols residence, only for Tory to angrily bring the food to the LaRusso dealership, declaring that she’s the one who puts food on her family’s table. After Sam provoked Tory at her job, Amanda reached out to talk to Tory, letting her know that the world wasn’t out to get her and that people couldn’t help unless she asked for help. It wasn’t long before Tory showed up at the LaRusso family’s doorstep, asking Amanda for help. The school principal said he’d give her another chance and let her back into school if the LaRussos agreed to it. Tory immediately promised to stay away from Sam, and Amanda added only one more condition - that Tory talk to someone about her situation that was completely unrelated to karate, be it a guidance counselor or therapist. They met again at the All Valley tournament, shortly before Tory’s match with Sam. Amanda said she didn’t want to get Sam to get hurt, and when Tory pointed out it was a karate match and that wasn’t something she could promise, Amanda clarified that what she wanted was for Tory to fight fairly. She also added that while she was cheering for her daughter, what she was really cheering for was an end to the rivalry between Sam and Tory.

Miguel Diaz - Tory’s ex-boyfriend. They first met at the Cobra Kai dojo when Sensei Johnny Lawrence was seeing who was willing to fight Miguel, the All-Valley champion. Despite being brand new, Tory was the one who volunteered. She held her own against him, and eventually won with a skillful takedown and hold. In the process of Tory helping Miguel get over his breakup with Sam, Tory and Miguel began dating. However, at a party, Sam and Miguel kissed, not realizing that Tory saw. When Miguel was badly injured in the massive karate fight at school that Tory instigated, she felt too guilty to visit him in the hospital. When they met again at the patio of a restaurant, Tory told him that they would get back at Miyagi-do for Miguel’s injuries because when one person from Cobra Kai was hurt, they were all hurt. Miguel was incredulous and reminded Tory that he was the only one who had gotten severely hurt. He was upset with Tory for not visiting him, and when she expressed her disappointment in him kissing Sam, he told her she needed help. They officially broke up then, but Miguel’s feelings for Tory hadn’t entirely disappeared when he rekindled his relationship with Sam. At prom, he kept looking at Tory when he was there with Sam.

Robby Keene - Former enemy, current friend and love interest. At first, Tory and Robby didn’t like each other, because Robby was a member of Miyagi-Do and close with Sam. After the big fight at West Valley high school that got Robby expelled and sent to juvenile detention, things began to change between them. Tory advised him on what to put on a questionnaire when he got out of juvie. When he moved in to the Cobra Kai dojo, Tory helped him to form connections and friendships with the other students. Not everyone was happy at him being there, and when he offered to leave if anyone could land a hit on him, Tory was the only one to succeed and insist that he stay. They began to grow closer as they trained together, impressed with each other’s fighting skills. Initially when they decided to go to prom together, it was a psychological tactic to make the Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang students uncomfortable with their presence. They abandoned that later, focusing on each other and having a great time, making out at the end of the night in the convertible Terry Silver loaned Robby.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:

Hard working - Throughout canon, Tory is shown balancing work, her education, martial arts training, and responsibilities to her family. She is the primary caregiver and breadwinner for her mother who is on dialysis as well as for her eight year old brother. When expelled from school for the massive fight she started, she is shown working two jobs and preparing for the GED. When training for the All Valley tournament, she puts her all into learning new techniques and refining her existing skills.

Loyal - Tory is loyal until given a reason not to be. When dating Miguel, she isn’t shown making eyes at anyone else. She takes attacks against her fellow Cobra Kai members personally and is ready to throw down for their sake. She also will speak out in their favour even when they’re perfectly able to defend themselves. When John Kreese introduces Terry Silver as the co-founder of Cobra Kai and Sensei Silver gives a lesson on weaknesses and says that everyone has one, Tory speaks up to say that Sensei Kreese doesn’t. Finally, her loyalty means that she is true to her word. If she makes a promise, she will do her best to keep it. She goes out of her way to keep her word to Amanda LaRusso, since Amanda LaRusso had helped her.

Protective - When Tory’s lowlife of an aunt tries to get some of Tory’s mother’s disability payment, Tory is quick to tell her to back off. Her aunt proceeds to talk about how it would be her rather than Tory who would get custody of Tory’s younger brother Brandon, given Tory’s young age and criminal record. This motivates Tory to do what she can to put herself in a better position to gain custody of Brandon. When the youngest member of Cobra Kai, Kenny, is harassed by members of the Eagle Fang dojo at the drive through movie they were all at, she’s among the first to get out of the car and get ready to fight.

(2+) Negative Experiences:

Anger issues - To say that Tory has anger management issues is an understatement. While it was entirely reasonable for her to be angry about the Sam & Miguel kiss while she was dating Miguel, and she had reasons to dislike Sam prior to that, her response was completely disproportionate and excessively violent. Tory’s quick to get aggressive when angered even in less emotional situations.

Ruthless - If Tory thinks someone deserves it, she won’t hesitate to attack an unarmed opponent with a weapon, as shown when she attacked Sam at one point with a spiked bracelet, giving Sam scars on her arm. At another point, she attacked Sam with nunchucks before Sam had picked up a staff to defend herself.

Vindictive - The flipside of Tory’s loyalty. Tory doesn’t forget a cut or a kindness, and when she’s been wronged by someone (or at least perceives the situation as being wronged), she is out to get them. When Miguel and Eli “Hawk” Moskowitz left Cobra Kai, she called them traitors and told them they’d better watch their backs. Eli was one of the people picking on her classmate Kenny, so she and a few other members of Cobra Kai got him alone and shaved off the mohawk he was so proud of.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers: Tory has no canon powers. She’s an athletic human with some natural talent for combat (ie. she picks up techniques she’s taught quickly) but none of her abilities fall into the superhuman range.
• Blood Type: Darkblood
• Omen: A black and gold dragon that’s about the size of an ostrich.
• Blessed Day: July 2nd
• Patron Pthumerian: The Reckoning
• Blood Power Manifestation:

Object Manifestation - As Tory has always taken pride of her ability to provide for herself and her loved ones, this will be the primary way in which the reality warping aspect of being a Darkblood manifests for her. At first, what she produces will be mundane objects connected to her basic needs and emotional state. If she’s cold? A sweater, coat, or blanket might appear. Hungry? Have a burger and fries. If she’s angry or scared? Things like swords and nunchucks will appear. If she’s calm and focuses, she’ll be able to produce things based on wants rather than needs, although initially it will only be mundane things she’s seen before (for example, a dress she liked). With time, practice, and power growth,, she’ll be able to produce things based purely on imagination, and if she teams up with other Darkbloods, this effect will be magnified.

Telekinesis - At first, Tory will have poor control and be limited to levitating objects that weigh no more than 100 pounds in total. With time and training, she’ll gradually increase how much she can lift, much like strengthening a muscle.

Event Reversal - Tory will be able to turn back time on specific small scale occurrences, such as a severe injury on one person, an object breaking, or a person’s corruption. (Pending player consent). This will be the most exhausting of Tory’s Darkblood powers, although backup from other Darkbloods will mitigate that effect. How exhausting will depend on how recent the event was. If it happened within the past hour, it will be less tiring than something that happened two days ago. She will not be able to reverse anything that happened on other worlds.
